Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres Taking swings
Sat, Apr 5, 2025, 11:00 AM
Torres (oblique) began hitting off a tee in the batting cages Saturday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Torres said afterward that his oblique is beginning to feel much better, though there is still no timeline in place for his return. He's eligible to return from the injured list Tuesday but will likely require more than a minimum-length stay.
Zach McKinstry
Zach McKinstry Getting Saturday off
Sat, Apr 5, 2025, 9:14 AM
McKinstry is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the White Sox.
Analysis: McKinstry will get a chance to catch his breath after going 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and a run scored in Friday's series opener. Andy Ibanez will take over at the hot corner and bat sixth.
Zach McKinstry
Zach McKinstry Reaches three times in win
Sat, Apr 5, 2025, 8:50 AM
McKinstry went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Friday's 7-4 win over the White Sox.
Analysis: It was a productive evening for McKinstry and it continued his impressive start to the season. The utility player is slashing .280/.379/.360 through seven contests, and he's seen time at five different positions already. McKinstry's .739 OPS would be a new career high, but it remains to be seen if the 29-year-old can sustain this level of production over the course of the year.
Kenta Maeda
Kenta Maeda Off to slow start
Sat, Apr 5, 2025, 8:46 AM
Maeda allowed three runs on four hits and a walk in an inning of relief during Friday's 7-4 win over the White Sox. He struck out one.
Analysis: Maeda entered the contest in the eighth inning with the Tigers up 7-1, and he made it through his first frame unscathed. However, the righty struggled mightily in the ninth and was yanked without recording any outs. Maeda has only made two appearances so far this year, but he's allowed five runs already over three innings of work. It's an uninspiring start to his relief role, though he does have time to turn things around.
Jack Flaherty
Jack Flaherty Strikes out seven in win
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 5:08 PM
Flaherty (1-0) earned the win against the White Sox on Friday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
Analysis: Flaherty allowed his only run on a second-inning double and was lifted just one out shy of a quality start after reaching 95 pitches. The 29-year-old has delivered steady performances in each of his first two outings, compiling a 2.38 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB across 11.1 innings. He'll face a tough test at home against the Yankees next week.
Riley Greene
Riley Greene Homer, three hits in win
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 5:00 PM
Greene went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, a double and an additional run scored in Friday's 7-4 win against the White Sox.
Analysis: Greene launched a 417-foot homer into the right field seats in the sixth inning, clocking in at an exit velocity of 114.3 mph. The 24-year-old is off to a scorching start this season, slashing .344 with seven extra-base hits through his first 32 plate appearances. The only blemish on his early stat line is a lopsided 0:10 BB:K.
Kerry Carpenter
Kerry Carpenter Homers twice in win
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 4:41 PM
Carpenter went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs in Friday's 7-4 win against the White Sox.
Analysis: Carpenter got the scoring started with a solo blast in the first inning and then followed it up with another in the fourth. According to Jason Beck of MLB.com, he is the first Tiger to homer twice in the team's home opener since Prince Fielder in 2013. The 27-year-old's second long ball notably came off a left-handed pitcher, as he entered Friday's contest with a .573 OPS in 138 career plate appearances against southpaws.
Alex Cobb
Alex Cobb Live BP on tap soon
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 9:50 AM
Cobb (hip) said Friday that he expects to throw a live batting practice session early next week, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Cobb has been throwing bullpen sessions, but this will be his first time facing hitters since he was diagnosed with right hip inflammation at the beginning of spring training. There is no timeline for the veteran right-hander's return, but it likely won't happen for at least another month or so.
Matt Vierling
Matt Vierling Not yet throwing
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 9:36 AM
Vierling (shoulder) said Friday that he has yet to start up a throwing program, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The 28-year-old resumed hitting a couple weeks ago and is taking part in defensive drills, but he apparently needs to strengthen his shoulder a bit more before he can begin full baseball activities. According to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News, Vierling will undergo an MRI within the next week, presumably to check the progress of the strained rotator cuff in his right shoulder.
Wenceel Perez
Wenceel Perez Gets another cortisone injection
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 9:21 AM
Perez (back) was given the second of two scheduled cortisone injections Friday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Analysis: Perez is recovering from lumbar spine inflammation and it's not clear when he will be ready to resume baseball activities. The outfielder is not expected back until sometime in May.
Ryan Kreidler
Ryan Kreidler Out of Detroit lineup
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 8:13 AM
Kreidler is absent from the lineup for Friday's contest versus the White Sox.
Analysis: Kreidler has been the Tigers' primary center fielder in the early going this season as the club deals with numerous injuries in its outfield, but he will begin this one on the bench. Riley Greene will slide over to center field for the series opener.
Jake Rogers
Jake Rogers Sitting out Friday
Fri, Apr 4, 2025, 8:11 AM
Rogers is absent from the lineup for Friday's game versus the White Sox.
Analysis: It's a routine day off for Rogers, who had started the last two contests. Dillon Dingler will do the catching and bat seventh for the Tigers.
Tarik Skubal
Tarik Skubal Gives up three runs in loss
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 9:22 PM
Skubal (0-2) took the loss against the Mariners on Wednesday. He allowed three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out eight across 5.2 innings.
Analysis: Skubal was able to limit the damage to three runs despite allowing nine base runners, though his solo homer to Dylan Moore in the fourth inning ultimately brought in the Mariners' game-winning run as the Tigers weren't able to generate enough offense to help Skubal avoid the loss. Skubal has failed to complete six innings in each of his first two starts and has begun the season with a 5.91 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across 10.2 innings. Things won't get easier for the 28-year-old southpaw, as he's slated to face the Yankees next week at home.
Riley Greene
Riley Greene Third-straight game with RBI
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 9:07 PM
Greene went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to Seattle.
Analysis: Greene extended his RBI streak to three games Wednesday when his ground out to third base in the fifth inning brought Ryan Kreidler home. Greene has started the season 8-for-27 with three doubles, four runs scored, two home runs and three RBI. He'll look to extend his streak to four games Friday in the Mariners' series opener against the White Sox.
Trey Sweeney
Trey Sweeney Pops first home run
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 8:11 PM
Sweeney went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Mariners.
Analysis: Sweeney popped his first home run of the season in the fifth inning against Seattle starter Luis Castillo. While it was the young shortstop's first extra-base hit of the year as well, he's still performed respectably with a .273 average and .713 OPS in the early going. As a rookie in 2024, Sweeney batted .218 with a .642 OPS during the regular season. The 24-year-old could be primed to take a step forward in 2025, and he figures to start at short most days against righties, with Javier Baez subbing in versus southpaws.
Ryan Kreidler
Ryan Kreidler Serving as primary center fielder
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 12:46 PM
Kreidler will start in center field and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Mariners.
Analysis: Kreidler has served as Detroit's primary center fielder so far this season, starting in five of the first six games while going 2-for-12 with a walk, a run and a stolen base. He'll likely move into a utility role or potentially even head to Triple-A Toledo once the Tigers get at least one of Wenceel Perez (back), Matt Vierling (shoulder) or Parker Meadows (arm) back from the injured list.
Tommy Kahnle
Tommy Kahnle Notches first save of season
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 8:09 AM
Kahnle worked a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his first save of the season in a 4-1 win over the Mariners.
Analysis: A hit-by-pitch spoiled what was otherwise a perfect inning for the right-hander in his first save chance of the year. It likely won't be Kahnle's last -- Beau Brieske, who blew his first save chance Friday, entered Tuesday's game with two outs in the sixth inning. Tyler Holton could also factor into the ninth-inning mix against tough left-handed hitters, and Jason Foley might return to the big-league bullpen if he pitches well for Triple-A Toledo, but for now Kahnle appears to be the favorite to close for the Tigers.
Casey Mize
Casey Mize Blanks Friars for first win
Wed, Apr 2, 2025, 8:00 AM
Mize (1-0) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one hit and three walks over 5.2 scoreless innings in a 4-1 victory over the Padres. He struck out six.
Analysis: The right-hander refined his split-finger pitch over the offseason, and after an impressive performance in spring training, he carried that success into the regular season. Mize was lifted after 82 pitches (48 strikes) one out short of a quality start after issuing two of his three free passes in the sixth inning, although the first was erased on a double play. While Mize has struggled to live up to his billing as the first overall pick in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, but 2025 might be the year the 27-year-old finally puts it all together. He's scheduled for a tough test in his next outing, at home early next week against the Yankees.
Javier Baez
Javier Baez Starting at hot corner
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 6:21 PM
Baez is starting at third base and batting ninth in Monday's game against the Mariners.
Analysis: Baez started Thursday's season opener at shortstop and he's also seen time at third off the bench in the early going, though this will be his first start at the hot corner. The veteran looks like more of a utility player for the Tigers this season versus a regular option at short, and he could even see time in the outfield after picking up some reps there during spring training. Baez may end up seeing a decent amount of playing time in this new role, though his fantasy outlook remains murky as a bench player.
Dillon Dingler
Dillon Dingler Starting Monday
Mon, Mar 31, 2025, 6:15 PM
Dingler is starting at catcher and batting seventh in Monday's game against the Mariners.
Analysis: Four games into the season, Dingler and Jake Rogers have alternated starts behind the plate each day, with Dingler getting the call Monday and Rogers headed to the bench. One of the two could emerge at some point to seize a larger role, but for now, it appears that they're locked into a fairly even split that puts a lid on the fantasy values of both players.
